How this works

Formula: Energy (kcal/day) = 89 × weight (kg) − 100, plus 175 (0–3 months), 56 (4–6 months) or 22 (7–12 months).

  • Energy uses the Institute of Medicine estimated energy requirement for infants, which depends on weight and age.
  • Protein, water, carbohydrate, iron and calcium use the Institute of Medicine reference intakes for 0–6 months and 7–12 months.
  • In the first 6 months, breast milk or formula supplies these. Breastfed babies are usually given a vitamin D supplement of 400 IU a day; ask your doctor.
  • Iron needs jump at about 6 months, which is one reason iron-rich first foods are suggested.

Questions

Do I need to count my baby's calories?

No. Babies are good at taking what they need. These numbers are background, not a target. Your baby's growth checks tell you more.

When should my baby start solid food?

Around 6 months for most babies, when they show signs of being ready. Ask your doctor or health visitor.

Does my baby need water?

Babies under about 6 months usually get all the fluid they need from breast milk or formula. Ask your doctor before giving water.
