Baby Eye Color

Pick each parent's eye color for a playful guess at your baby's. Real eye color depends on many genes, so treat this as fun.

For fun only. This is not accurate and cannot tell you your baby's sex or traits.

General information only, not medical advice. Ask your doctor or midwife.

How this works

Formula: Simple two-gene model: brown beats green and blue; green beats blue. Each parent's possible gene pairs are weighted equally.

  • The model uses two genes. One has a brown version and a blue version, with brown dominant. The other has a green version and a blue version, with green dominant.
  • Any brown copy gives brown eyes. With no brown copy, any green copy gives green or hazel. Otherwise, blue.
  • We list every gene pair that fits each parent's eye color, weight them equally, and count every way they can combine.
  • Many babies are born with lighter eyes that darken over the first year, so wait a while before you decide.

Questions

Can two blue-eyed parents have a brown-eyed baby?

This simple model says no, but in real life it can happen because many genes are involved.

When do babies' eyes settle on a color?

Eye color can keep changing in the first year, and sometimes a little longer.

Is this accurate?

No. It is a fun, simplified model, not a genetic test.
