Infant Feeding Volume

Enter your baby's weight and how many feeds a day. We estimate milk per day and per bottle, for formula or expressed milk.

Units
Newborns often feed 8 to 12 times a day

General information only, not medical advice. Ask your doctor or midwife.

How this works

Formula: Daily milk ≈ 150 mL per kg (about 2.5 oz per lb), up to about 32 oz (950 mL). Per feed = daily ÷ feeds per day.

  • A common rule of thumb is about 150 mL of milk per kg of body weight per day, or 2.5 oz per pound.
  • Most babies do not need more than about 32 oz (950 mL) a day, so the estimate stops there.
  • Divide by the number of feeds to get a rough bottle size.
  • In the first days after birth babies take much smaller amounts. Breastfed babies feed on cue, so this is mainly for bottles.

Questions

How do I know my baby is getting enough?

Steady weight gain, plenty of wet diapers and a content baby after feeds are good signs. Your doctor checks growth at visits.

Should I make my baby finish the bottle?

No. Follow your baby's cues. Some feeds will be bigger than others.

Does this change after 6 months?

Once solids start, milk is still important, but the amount often levels off. Ask your doctor about your baby.
