Gender by Parent Blood Type

Pick both parents' blood groups and see what this folk method guesses. Just for fun.

For fun only. This is not accurate and cannot tell you your baby's sex or traits.

General information only, not medical advice. Ask your doctor or midwife.

How this works

Formula: Number the groups O = 1, A = 2, B = 3, AB = 4. Add the two numbers: even = boy, odd = girl.

  • This folk method numbers blood groups the old way: O is group 1, A is 2, B is 3 and AB is 4.
  • It adds the mother's and father's numbers. An even total is read as a boy and an odd total as a girl.
  • Other versions of this folk method use different tables, which is one more sign that it is not a real prediction.
  • This is a folk method shared for fun. It is not accurate and cannot tell you your baby's sex. Only medical tests, such as an ultrasound or a blood test, can do that.

Questions

Does blood type affect a baby's sex?

No. A baby's sex comes from the sex chromosomes, not from blood type.

Why would anyone use this?

Just for fun, like guessing games at a baby shower.

Can blood type matter in pregnancy for other reasons?

Yes. Your Rh factor can matter for care in pregnancy. Your doctor or midwife will check it.
